Andy Warhol
1928 - 1987
Flowers (Hand-Colored). 1974.
Silkscreen, with watercolor.
Monogrammed in the lower right. Signed, dated, and numbered on the reverse, along with the copyright stamp. One of 250 copies, each of which is considered a unique work due to its hand-coloring. On J. Green wove paper (with watermark). 103.1 x 69.1 cm (40.5 x 27.2 in), size of sheet.
Printed by Alexander Heinrici, New York. Published by Peter M. Brant, Castelli Graphics, and Multiples, Inc., New York (stamped on the reverse with “© Copyright by Andy Warhol Multiples Inc. & Castelli Graphics 2, 1974”).
The “Flowers (Hand-Colored)” portfolio is the only series in which the individual sheets are hand-colored, as seen in Andy Warhol’s early hand-colored books. Each sheet is therefore considered a unique piece. [KA].
• The delicate hand-coloring gives the work its unique character.
• Here, Warhol combines his two masterful talents as a printmaker and draftsman.
• Other copies of the hand-colored “Flowers” are held in renowned museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, as well as the Art Institute of Chicago.

PROVENANCE: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.

LITERATURE: Frayda Feldman, Jörg Schellmann, Claudia Defendi, Andy Warhol Prints. A catalogue raisonné 1962–1987, New York 2003, CR no. IlA.110 (with illustration, different copy).
