Franz Hitzler
1946
Ohne Titel. 1980.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated on the reverse. 122 x 100.5 cm (48 x 39.5 in), visible area, not unframed. [JS].

• Since the 1970s, Hitzler has depicted existential emotional worlds—ranging from death and suffering to joy—in his characteristic style of painting, executed with spontaneity and impulsiveness.
• In this painting, Hitzler uses powerful brushstrokes and a vibrant color palette to condense signs and symbols into artistic shorthand on the canvas.
• Rembrandt/Rubens/Titian: Franz Hitzler’s painting is strongly influenced by the themes and motifs of Old Master history painting, whose existential messages he translates into a modern, almost abstract visual language.
• Hitzler studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1967 to 1972
.
