Barely legibly signed in the lower right. On wove paper. 25.8 x 40 cm (10.1 x 15.7 in), the full sheet. [AW].

• With concise lines, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff depicts his wife Emy reading.
• Banned from painting since 1941, he created small-format, colorful masterpieces in the seclusion of rural solitude.
• Only a few works from this period have survived; many were destroyed in 1945.

The work is documented in the archive of the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation, Berlin.

PROVENANCE: Private collection, southern Germany.
