Küstenlandschaft. 1937.
Gouache over chalks.
Signed and dated in the lower right, titled in the lower left. On wove paper (with an nameless watermark). 49.6 x 62.6 cm (19.5 x 24.6 in), the full sheet.
[MH].

• Atmospheric landscape watercolor with strong and light parts.
• The combination of different painting techniques makes for a particularly aesthetic composition.
• Around 1934/35, Heckel still had several solo exhibitions before he increasingly faced repression under the National Socialists, who imposed an exhibition ban on him the year this work was made
.

We are grateful to Mrs. Renate Ebner, Estate of Erich Heckel Hemmenhofen, for her kind support in cataloging this lot.

PROVENANCE: Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia.
Private collection, North Rhine-Westphalia (acquired from the above in 2021).

In good condition. Paper skinned in places on the reverse owing to former mounting, with a few tiny holes (max. 1 mm) in the center of the unpainted area, but not impairing the overall harmonious impression. Slightly browned and light-stained, with very few tiny foxing spots.
For information concerning the condition, please view the high resolution image / backside image.
