Am Meer. 1962.
Woodcut.
Ebner/Gabelmann 1034 H. Dube H 445. Signed, dated and dedicated "Für 1963 gute Wünsche [von S. u. (nachträglich wohl von Sidi Heckel ergänzt)] EH.". From an edition of 110 copies (according to Heckel's information on the wooden block). On off-white machine-made laid paper. 17.4 x 13.9 cm (6.8 x 5.4 in). Sheet: 23,2 x 16,5 cm (9,1 x 6,5 in).
The wooden block is at the Altonaer Museum, Hamburg, verso inscribed "110 Drucke 1962 für 1963".
As of 1930, Heckel sent the so-called annual sheets as New Years greetings to friends and family (except for 1941). Up until 1967, he made a total of 37 annual sheets in woodcut. [JS].
• The small annual sheet provides excellent proof of Heckel's graphic mastery: He conceived the landscapre almost exclusively from horizontal cuts.
• With the subject of a figure from behind gazing into nature, Heckel picks up a pictorial tradition that goes back to Caspar David Friedrich and Romanticism.
• From 1930 to 1967 (not in 1941), Heckel sent the so-called annual sheets as New Years greetings to friends and family.
• Other copies are in the Erich Heckel Estate and the Museum Folkwang
.
