Männlicher Akt. 1909.
Pen and India ink drawing.
On off-white wove paper. 21.5 x 13.8 cm (8.4 x 5.4 in), size of sheet.
Presumably from the sketchbook 4 (Presler Skb 4) from 1908. Similar works are "Liegender am Moritzburger See", 1909 (in: Brigitte Schad (ed.), Kirchners Badende, Aschaffenburg 2021, p. 54) and "Liegendes Mädchen mit Stirnband", 1910 (in: Kunstblätter der Galerie Nierendorf, no. 27/28, cat. no. 5, p. 5). [CH/AM].
• Early pen and ink drawing from the sought-after Dresden "Brücke" period with the pure outline characteristic of the "Brücke" without interior structure.
• Male nudes are very rare in artist's oeuvre.
• Possibly from the sketchbook 4 (1908, Presler Skb 4).
• Kirchner used the sketchbook as an independent place of compositional density and velocity, created in the "ecstasy of the moment".
• During these years, the Dresden studio on Berliner Strasse was not only the living and working space of the "Brücke" artists, but also a meeting place for numerous, mostly female, amateur models.
• In fast, dynamic drawings, Kirchner and the "Brücke" artists devoted themselves to the study of nudes and the casual, natural nudity, both in the studio and plein-air
.

We are grateful to Prof. Dr. Dr. Gerd Presler for his kind expert advice.
