Giovanni Battista Piranesi

The Italian graphic artist and architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi (also: Giambattista Piranesi) achieved world-wide fame as grandmaster of the veduta and the fantastic capriccio.
The size and significance of buildings in the new and the ancient Rome were a life-topic for Giovanni Battista Piranesi, which coined his artistic creation in all areas: as architect, author, explorer and graphic artist. In an impressive synthesis of a documental pursuit and great creativity, the powerful vedutas by Giovanni Battista Piranesi display the (metaphysic) size of the depicted object. His capriccios even went a step further: Particularly the "Carceri", intensive and dense, almost surreal architectural visions, let Giovanni Battista Piranesi appear as one of the most imaginative talents of the late 18th century, and thus on the cusp of Modernism.
Numerous expert publications and exhibition projects are proof of Giovanni Battista Piranesi's recognition.
