Dieter Roth Dieter Roth - Biography
Dieter Roth (also: Diter Rot) counts among the most important artists of the 20th century. Dieter Roth's versatile talents find expression in numerous artistic genres throughout his life: painting, drawing, graphic art, object- and action art are part of his oeuvre just as numerous own literary works. In term of style, the paintings and graphic creations of Dieter Roth, who showed works at the documenta several times, come in different occurrences, ranging from geometrical abstract compositions to gestic-wild and expressive relinquishings. As far as his object art is concerned, which in his case is obliged to neo-dada, his total work of art called "Schimmelmuseum" [Mildew Museum] is particularly worthwhile mentioning. A 'museum' in which, until its demolition in 2004, the walls, ceilings and floors were ornamented by putrescence, forming a fascinating artistic cosmos with the ephemeral sculptures of food and the murals. Comprehensive retrospectives, participation in countless exhibitions as well as his work's presence in international collections such as the Schaulager Basel are proof of the artistic rank of Dieter Roth.
