August Macke August Macke - Biography
August Macke was one of the luminaries of German Expressionism. Even though he lived a short life only, he died on the Western front in World War I, August Macke left behind an impressive and manifold oeuvre, which comprises, besides unique oil paintings, delicate watercolors and drawings as well as expressive woodcuts. August Macke was a member of the important artist group "Der Blaue Reiter", he created poised compositions in merry colors in which he masterly employed expressionist principles. A last highlight in the artistic creation of August Macke are the fascinating watercolors in which he captured impressions from a journey to Tunis.
Works by August Macke, whose art was defamed as 'degenerate' during National Socialism, are in possession of renowned museums, such as the Munich Lenbachhaus or in the "August Macke House" in Bonn, which has a biographic-historic focus.
