Tom Wesselmann Tom Wesselmann - Biography

Tom Wesselmann is one of the most famous and most prominent Pop Artists.
He made small abstract collages as early as in the late 1950s, which show the influence of Henri Matisse and Willem de Kooning. Tom Wesselmann's work was recognized on a broader scale for the first time with the series of "Great American Nudes" from the 1960s. The numerous "Bathtubs", which addressed the suspenseful issue of intimacy and voyeurism, also attracted great public attention. Erotic would soon become the leitmotif in Tom Wesselmann's oeuvre, which uses advertising aesthetics, cliches and an anonymized, literally "faceless" sexuality. From the beginnings on a certain decorative urge was also characteristic of Tom Wesselmann's art, it bestows a particular charm on "Metal Works" (as of 1983) and the loud and lurid graphic works.
Works by Tom Wesselmann are in possession of renowned international collections such as the Albertina in Vienna, the Hara Museum in Tokyo or the Kunsthalle Hamburg.
