Gottfried Mairwöger
1951 - 2003
Phaedros. 1982.
Oil on canvas.
153 x 126.5 cm (60.2 x 49.8 in). [AW].

• A work characterized by dynamic gestures and a mysterious, intense radiance.
Gottfried Mairwöger is one of the most important figures in abstract painting in Austria.
• Similar to Helen Frankenthaler, he used heavily thinned oil paints in the 1980s to create opulent color fields and streams of color.
• The artist’s works are at, among others, the Albertina in Vienna, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston
.

PROVENANCE: Galerie Ulysses, Vienna (gallery label on the reverse of the stretcher).
Private collection, Munich (acquired from the above in 1984).

Condition: In good condition, with vivid colors. Shows signs of rubbing, particularly in the lower left portion of the painting, some of which have resulted in color loss. There is a scratch mark in the upper left part of the painting, likely caused during production. A linear irregularity runs horizontally across the center of the canvas, likely caused during production. The lower right corner has two small, spot-like deposits.
The condition report was compiled in daylight with the aid of a UV light source, and to the best of our knowledge and belief.
For information concerning the condition, please view the high resolution image / backside image.
