Henri Matisse
1869 - 1954
Etude pour la vierge ”Tete voilée”. 1950/51.
Lithograph.
Signed and numbered. From an edition of 200 copies. On Annam paper, laminated on Arches wove paper. 27.6 x 19.5 cm (10.8 x 7.6 in). Sheet: 50,5 x 38,1 cm (19,8 x 15 in).
[AH].
• From a series of designs for the chapel in Vence.
• An outstanding example of the refined and minimalist lines that characterize the artist’s late work.
• Another copy is in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
.

PROVENANCE: Private collection, Rhineland.
Private collection, Northern Germany.

LITERATURE: Marguerite Duthuit-Matisse, Claude Duthuit, Henri Matisse. Catalogue raisonné de l’oeuvre gravé, vol. II, Paris 1983, CR no. 641 (with ill., presumably a different copy).

The sheet is generally slightly unevenly browned, with slightly heavier browning around the mount. The edges of the sheet are generally stained. There is a slight horizontal crease in the center of the sheet, which has been professionally smoothed out. There is a tiny tear at the top of the right edge, which has been professionally restored.
The Annam paper in the upper right corner has a small area of paper loss. There are faint traces of moisture in the upper left corner and to the right of the image, as well as two small areas of rubbing.
The reverse side bears remnants of the old mounting, some of which extend beyond the edge.
