Hans von Marées
1837 - 1887
Sitzende Figuren in einer römischen Landschaft. 1870/80.
Pencil drawing and white chalk.
On subtly grayish lais paper with the watermarks "ED&C" and "PL BAS". 60.5 x 46.5 cm (23.8 x 18.3 in), the full sheet. [EH].
Verso: Figure group. Charcoal drawing with red pen, white chalk and green pen.

Hans von Marées develops the basic forms of his figure compositions through his drawings.
• Monumental effect through sculptural modeling and clear emphasis on the outline.
• Marées' drawings combine classical tradition with a visionary approach to modern art
.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Günther Förg (acquired in 2008).

In good condition. Overall slightly unevenly browned and with a few brown spots. The edges of the sheet are slightly uneven. Small tears around the edges. Under UV light, paper fillings are visible in the edges of the sheet, some of which extend into the image. These are barely visible in daylight. There is a horizontal, smoothed crease along the upper edge of the sheet and a diagonal, smoothed crease in the lower part of the image.
For information concerning the condition, please view the high resolution image / backside image.
