George Grosz
1893 - 1959
Stehender weiblicher Akt. 1913.
Black Chalk drawing and pencil.
Signed and dated in the lower right and inscribed “16” by another hand. Verso with the estate stamp and the handwritten archive number “5 17 8” as well as various handwritten numbers. On brownish wove paper. 32.5 x 26.6 cm (12.7 x 10.4 in), size of sheet. [CH].

• Early work by the artist, whose entire oeuvre is characterized by female nudes, some of them scantily clad, later often in connection with erotic fantasies, obsessive sensuality, and vulgar motifs.
• With his often socio-critical and provocative imagery, Grosz shattered petty bourgeois facades all his life, even in his early years.
• In 1909, Grosz began his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, and from 1912 onwards he studied intermittently at the School of Applied Arts in Berlin as a student of Emil Orlik (1870–1932)
.

PROVENANCE: Estate of the artist (1959).
Private collection Günther Förg (acquired in 2007: Karl & Faber).

LITERATURE: Karl & Faber, Munich, 216th auction, Modern & Contemporary Art, November 29, 2007, lot 1407 (with illustration).
