Hofmaier 120 II (of III). Gallwitz 94. Signed, dated and inscribed "Selbstportrait 17 No. II". One of to date three known copies. On laid paper (with watermark "Original Hand Linen P & H"). 20.4 x 15.7 cm (8 x 6.1 in). Sheet: 32,5 x 25 cm (12,7 x 9,8 in).
• Very rare self portrait that has never been published and presumably remained unfinished.
• In 1917, when the work was made, J. B. Neumann opened the first exhibiition of graphic works by the artist in Berlin, and soon became one of his most important publishers.
• Beckmann became occupied with graphic art from an early point on: he made his first etching, also a self-portrait, in 1901

PROVENANCE: Private collection Southern Germany.

LITERATURE: Kunsthaus Lempertz, Cologne, 488th auction, June 1966, lot 56 (with illu., plate 19).

In good condition. With small isolated brownish spots, slightly soiled in white margin and with minimal handling marks. Corners with small spots from an old mounting, right margin irregular.
